New Year Gift-giving Customs Around The World

New Year is one of the few holidays celebrated worldwide. At the stroke of midnight on January 1 in any time zone, the air fills with merrymaking as people usher in the new year with a bang. Even countries with their own new year dates, such as China and India, join the rest of the world in celebrating the arrival of the Gregorian calendar new year.

Gift-giving is not as widespread in New Year as it is in Christmas, particularly in Western countries. However, many people still exchange small gifts and tokens to spread cheer and to wish others good luck. In many countries, round-shaped foods are popular gifts during the New Year as these things are believed to bring good luck. Some say that anything round represents “coming full circle”, while others believe it symbolizes money and prosperity.

In Western countries, “crackers” are given away on New Year’s eve parties, to be opened when the clock strikes 12:00 AM. Crackers are a kind of party favor, typically a cylindrical container with various noisemakers and confetti inside that guests can enjoy during the revelries.

Exchanging greeting cards is also one of the most popular ways of spreading cheer during the New Year. This practice is especially helpful in keeping in touch with friends and family who are away. It is also good for business, as it helps companies maintain contact and rapport with clients, customers, and colleagues.
